Sruthan Na Feoraig- Burn of the little squirrel

This house is designed to fit into the steeply sloping site, the site itself divided by a small burn. Half the house will be bedded into the site at the back while the front half will be supported by posts and beams.

The house is designed to be heated by passive solar gains with input from a wood burning stove.

The layout of the house follows from the logic that for passive solar gains to be maximized, the spaces used most during the day are orientated towards the sun. Utility spaces are orientated to the north and west while the living spaces are orientated east and south. A double-height sun-porch is orientated to the south, where it can generate a lot of free heat for the house, but in cold periods double glazing and insulated walls will protect the main living spaces from it acting as a heat sink.

Planning consent and Building Warrant have been obtained and work is progressing on site, firstly with the construction of reed beds. Thereafter structural piles and ground beams will be installed to support the 100m2 house.
